When To Plant

One question I'm often asked when it's know I have quite a large food garden in Cairns is what to grow when. A simple answer is basically anything in the dry season from April to October, and only a limited number of things in the wet(in this case I'm refering to veg).
I should note that I'm in the process of developing a more comprehensive guide to planting here in Cairns and the tropics. some varieties of for example corns and cucumber grow best planted in april and some varieties grow best as it starts to heat up in August.Chinese Snake Cucumber grow best as it starts to heat up in August and Lebonese cucumber grow better in the cooler months from April.
Again you can only really count on these guides if your soil is full of composted organic matter to retain nutrients and protect soil from the blazing sun and pouring rain.
The rain seems to have finally eased. I've been harvesting and continue to harvest some long beans during the wet, also basil, chives and eggplant seems to power on.
Just cut off my last capsicum plant at the beginning of Febuary - lasted much longer than I expected.

As a rough rule I use this rule. Asian vegetables in the wet season.
Traditional European vegetables in the dry season.
It's only a rough guide and I don't always follow it to the letter, but it does work for me. And it means we have heaps of fresh greens all year round.
