Growing Herbs In The Tropics

Herbs add that extra dimension to the taste of food, to have them conveniently near the kitchen is an added bonus but many common culinary herbs are native to temperate regions but some will tolerate a tropical climate.Their are also many herbs used in Asian cuisine native to the tropics.
Generally most temperate herbs will grow in the winter months from April to October, so you can plant out just about anything after the wet, but some will even grow through the wet, giving you something to use in the kitchen throughout the year.
Remember you can also sun dry your excess herbs and store in an air tight container to use during the wet.
Herbs require a minimum of 6 hours sun to grow,
however some temperate will tolerate partial shade but their growth and quality will not be as good. Herbs native to the tropics will be more tolerant of shade..................................................................

Hi Barry, can you help me on how to grow potted herbs in jakarta, Indonesia? I got them from a local store but they look sorry after a few days... Tried the full sun, the morning sun only, fully shaded, and even indoors... They still die... I tried sage, thyme, basil and Italian parsley... Would be great to hear from you! Thanks!

Hi Elgy,
Sorry about the delay in posting a comment. Jakarta is loacated 5 degrees North of the equator seasonal changes and day/night length fairly constant. I would look at finding a spot with as much air flow as possible so the plants can transpire efficiently.
I would consider a shade cloth if such a spot was too exposed to sun.
Make sure your pots are not too small, terracotta would be best.
The soil must be free draining 60/40 sand to other matter.
Bring inside during heavy down pours - higher maintenace in that enviroment but possible!
