Soy Beans

I planted some Soya Beans on Wednesday the 26th of August for the first time. The first one came up on Sunday the 30th. Excited to see how they progress as things start to warm up in Cairns. Will be obseving also if they develope the lobes on the root that house the nitrogen fixing bateria.
When the beans develope I'll keep you posted on making Tofu and another way of eating soya beans I was introduced to in Japan "eda mame"
The Japanese name literally means "twig bean" (eda = "twig" + mame = "bean"), and is a reference to the short stem attached to the pod. This term originally referred to young soybeans in general. Over time, however, the prevalence of the salt-boiled preparation meant that the term edamame now often refers specifically to this dish.
(taken from wikIpedia)
The beans are picked young and boiled in their pod in some salted water. Very nice!
They are also very good for you, topping the list of most healthy food in Japan!
I have some corn in I planted 1 month ago seems fine be interesting to see how it goes in the heat. Corn is originally a tropical grass and along with other tropical grasses Photosynthesizes using a more efficient method known as C4 other plants C3,reducing water loss and utilizing the CO2 efficiently.
Called C3 because CO2 is first incorporated into a 3 carbon compound as apposed to 4.
With C3 the plants stomata are open during the day. Rubisco the enzyme involved in photosynthsis, is also the enzyme involved in the uptake of CO2 - C4 uses the enzyme PEP Carboxylase in CO2 uptake it then goes to Rubisco for photosynthsis, this enzyme allows CO2 to be taken into the plant quickly - so as no to compete with oxygen as in C3. C4 plant can therefor photosynthsis faster under high light intensities and high temperature because CO2 is delivered directly to Rubisco not allowing it to grab oxygen and undergo photorespiration.
C4 plants also have better water efficiency because PEP carboxlase brings in CO2 faster so the stomata can close down reducing water loss.
.04% of plant species are C4
I'll also be planting some grain amaranth - I'd then like to process it into a sour dough bread I'll keep you posted.
