Storing Seeds

Something often overlooked by food gardeners is seed storage. I use to buy a packet of seeds and when they aren’t used up so I’d just fold the top over and store them in the laundry – come next year when planted out the germination rate was very low, so why?

The main enemies of stored seeds are high moisture and high temperatures and together the worst combination just like my laundry and like most storage places here in the tropics. I guess the best way is to use up all you buy. If you start saving your own seeds (which saves a lot of money) you’ll need to store them properly to ensure maximum germination rate when planted out............................................................

Just read your article in the Cairns Weekend Post. So glad their is finally someone out there helping me grow a vege patch in the tropics (Cairns). My veges either drown from the rain or fry from the sun. Plants labelled 'full sun' usually mean full sun in places like Syd not Cairns. I look forward to using your help to suceed in harvesting a crop this year.
